Nutrition

  • When you are experiencing bland taste, it can be helpful to use strong flavoured spices in your food and cooking such as ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. If these spices taste good to you, you can try using the more often in both sweet and savoury dishes, such as when cooking meats, potatoes, stews and casseroles. When experiencing bland taste, you may find it helpful to experiment more with using foods and spices in new ways to see what flavour combinations you can taste.
  • Pumpkin is a good source of Vitamin A in the form of carotenoids.  In fact, 1/4 cup of canned pumpkin provides about 50% of an adult's daily vitamin A requirements. Carotenoids are one of the nutrients that help the body to protect against damage to cells that can lead to cancer.  As part of a balanced and varied diet, food sources of Vitamin A and carotenoids you can eat include yellow, orange, and red fruits and vegetables.

Note: All of the vitamin and mineral recommendations provided refer to getting more food sources of these nutrients. It is not recommended to take any vitamin or mineral supplements (i.e. pill or powder supplements) without speaking to your doctor or a registered dietitian. Getting too much of a vitamin or mineral from supplements can have negative effects on the body and may negatively interact with cancer treatments.
